Ordinary Objects Becoming Unusual Surprises

Mark Jenkin's Street Art takes various normal elements which are found in the urban environment and alters them to provide surprises to locals.

The Little People Street Art Project also brings unique elements to an ordinary environment.

The Gun Control Alliance is committed to enhancing public safety by reducing the number of guns in South Africa society through stricter gun control.
For one of its campaigns in 2000, the association had installed on university campuses and shopping malls several vending machines that sell guns. A simple and direct way to demonstrate how easy it is to get hold of a gun in South Africa. The money collected was used to support the activities of the gun-free society.

Connecting the Online World with the Real World

Playing Flickr is an interactive installation where through the use of SMS, people are able to change the real world images displayed through the online medium of Flickr.

Semapedia is a project which uses semacode nodes to connect Wikipedia articles with their relevant place in physical space.Placing physical semapedia tags on real-world objects allows people with smartphones to use their built-in cameras to decode the Wikipedia-URL from the semacode. The phone can then use its internal browser to display the Wikipedia article of the physical object to the user.

Thousands of people have since then contributed to a growing sea of images. communimage is an attempt to entertain a visual global dialogue.

The Firefox Crop Circle was a creation of students from the University of Oregon. The students pooled their resources to create a large crop circle to show their love of their favorite brows

Vending Machine with Custom Cans -- Vending machines with cameras are put in public space around the world. The camera will capture pictures around the machine or of the person purchasing the soda. The pictures will be uploaded online and distributed to other machines in the world. The pictures are printed on the can in the machine as a surprise to the people buying them.

Customized Plastic Bottle Label -- When a person puts a plastic bottle in the recycle machine there will be pleasant music and a photo taken of that user. A ticket will be given to the user for access online. They can add messages or other photos online which can be sent to other vending machines. The user can buy the customized bottle in specific vending machines as a gift or personal collection.

Coffee Plate Display -- When a person is stirring coffee, the spoon will trigger the navigation of a display on the plate. As an example, there maybe an image of the Earth showing on the plate, and stirring the coffee will rotate and zoom the earth. Perhaps news feeds can be displayed and changed via stirring.

Hot News Coffee Table -- This table will be placed in a cafeteria. When someone puts coffee on it, the table senses the heat and shows the news depending on the temperature of the coffee. Different areas of the table will show different kinds of news. The stirring action can be used for changing the news or triggering of music.

Soap Mouse -- A sensor is put inside a bar of soap. When the user using the soap in shower, the soap movement will trigger the navigation of the images, videos and messages, that are updated online and projected on the wall inside shower.

Shower Navigator -- The shower head can be used as a pointer to navigate images, videos and messages, which are updated everyday online and projected on the wall inside shower.

Toilet Paper Printer -- Messages, blogs, pictures, RSS Feeds, etc, that the user has subscribed to can be printed on toilet paper to give the user content and surprises everyday.

starting with our intentions we've made a list of potential objects and environments

Updates for the Elderly – As the major pieces of modern technology found in homes of the elderly, the TV and Radio are a vital element of communication. A simple interface along with connectivity to the web would allow for new communication surprises for the elderly.
New remote styling would diminish the fear of technology for the elderly.

New communication aspects can be developed while preserving the simplicity and familiarity of these objects .

Coffee Cup – The morning coffee ritual provides many areas for new interactions. The coffee cup can become a new interface with nearby objects during daily activities.

Vending Machines - these objects are strewn about a city, yet offer no form of connectivity. These machines can be altered to bring together the lives of the locals.

Metro – Boring, loud, cold, and impersonal. The environment of the metro can be improved in many ways through simple changes. Little surprises along a daily commute can help people enjoy and interact in this traditionally dismal environment.
